A farce and spectacle of a love story by Restoration playwright Aphra Behn, edited by KU doctoral student Gillian Genardo, The Emperor of the Moon is a play based on Italian commedia dell’arte with scenography taking inspiration from midcentury modern architecture and futuristic aesthetic (à la The Jetsons). It’s science fiction meets comic socioeconomic commentary with delightful winks to the audience. A display will be available in the exhibition hallway leading to the theatre for those interested in learning more about Aphra Behn and the history of women writers in the science fiction genre. Patrons can also attend a pre-show talk with Jane Barnette, head of dramaturgy and professor in theatre & dance, Misty Schieberle, and Sarah Van der Laan, professors in English, at 6 p.m. in Murphy Hall, Room 341 prior to the November 4 performance. The talk will be moderated by Cecelia Hart, the play’s dramaturg and doctoral student in literature. A Q&A with the director and performers will follow that same performance in the Inge Theatre. Tickets are available in person at the University Theatre Box Office in Murphy Hall (M-F, noon-5pm), by calling 785-864-3982, or online kutheatre.com. No late seating for this production.
