In this video, Jason Fettig, professor of music and director of bands at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, provides an engaging and illuminating commentary on the art of conducting. Fettig walks viewers through select measures in the U-M Symphony Band’s performance of Percy Grainger’s In a Nutshell, alternating between clips of the performance and commentary on his actions and intentions as conductor. He demonstrates at each step how he uses not just his conductor’s baton but his whole body, from his face down to his toes, to communicate with the band and elicit the precise sound, volume, and energy from the musicians that will best serve the music in that moment.
