The Bulldog Brass Society performs "My Spirit is Joyful" by J.S. Bach. The Bulldog Brass Society is made up of graduate students Regan O'Connor DMA (2022), Trumpet Performance, Shengduo Chen (2021) DMA, Trumpet Performance, Stephen Newberry (2022) DMA, Horn Performance, Blake Lawson (2021) MM, Trombone Performance, and Joseph Guimaraes (2021) DMA, Tuba Performance. The Bulldog Brass Society is the premier graduate brass quintet at the University of Georgia. The Bulldogs were created in the fall of 1996 by Frederick Mills, a founding member of the Canadian Brass and professor of trumpet at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, until his passing in 2009. In the years following, members of the HHSOM brass faculty, Joshua Bynum, Brandon Craswell, Jean Martin-Williams, and David Zerkel, coached the Bulldogs. They were also coached by David Bilger, Principal Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra, during his tenure at the HHSOM. Since 2014, Philip Smith, former Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic and current William & Pamela Prokasy Professor in the Arts, has been the Bulldog coach. The B.B.S. is a self-run group, responsible for their schedule, programming and repertoire. The ensemble, one of the most active student chamber groups on campus, performs repertoire ranging from the Renaissance period to the current contemporary quintet repertoire, as well as ""light"" works and ""hot off the press"" new compositions. In their recent history, the B.B.S. has been invited to perform at major venues, including the 2018 Inaugural American Brass Quintet Seminar in Aspen, CO, the 2016 Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville, KY, and the 2011 Rekkenze Brass Festival in Lichtenburg, Germany. They have also performed at the 2017 U.G.A. Spotlight on the Arts, been finalists in MTNA Chamber Music competitions, and featured at the Southeastern Composers League Convention. The quintet gives back to the Athens/Atlanta/North Georgia community by being very visible on campus with two recitals each year, and by performing public concerts and service-oriented programs. Recent performances have included the Fine Arts Series at First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, First Presbyterian Church of Athens, Reynolds Plantation ""Linger Longer Living"" series in Greensboro, and the retirement communities of Lenbrook in Atlanta, Lanier Village in Gainesville, and Talmage Terrace in Athens. They also provide programs and masterclasses for high schools in the area, including most recently Clarke Central High School in Athens and Lassiter High School in Atlanta.
