The Turner-Fischer Center for Opera opens the 2026-27 season with Engelbert Humperdinck's enchanting Hänsel und Gretel. Based on the classic Brothers Grimm tale, this opera has become one of the most beloved fairy-tale operas ever created, resonating with audiences of all ages. A protégé of Richard Wagner, Humperdinck brings to the score a rich musical sophistication shaped by his mentor's influence, whil retaining a warmth and lyric charm all his own. Beneath its magical surface, the opera acknowledges the darker textures of the Grimm tradition, yet presents them with elegance, wit, and heart. Libretto by Adelheid Wette. Conducted by Michael Borowitz. The opera will be sung in German with English supertitles.
