CLACS welcomes Eduardo Herrera (Folklore and Ethnomusicology) for the first CLACS Faculty Research presentation of the Fall 2026 semester. Join us as he presents:Sounds of the World Cup: Fan Atmospheres, Collective Affect, and Sonic PracticesAbstract: Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted during the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup in Buenos Aires, this presentation examines how sound, collective memory, and national narratives shaped Argentine experiences of the final stages of the tournament. Focusing on the contrasting atmospheres surrounding Argentina's semifinal against England and final against Spain, I consider how the historical memory of the Malvinas/Falklands War, comparisons between Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, and newly circulating World Cup chants intensified the affective stakes of watching and supporting the national team. Photographs, field recordings, and video illustrate how collective sounding and embodied participation transformed World Cup spectatorship into a powerful site for experiencing national belonging, historical memory, anticipation, and defeat.
